Flux and Gangue:
At the same time the limestone which was added as a part of charge and is known as the Flux, decomposes to form calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide.

 

The calcium oxide then reacts with the gangue (impurities in the ore) which is mostly sand (or silica, SiO2) with some alumina (Al2O3). As non-metallic oxides these are acidic, so they combine with the basic calcium oxide forming the molten salts calcium silicate and calcium aluminate respectively.
